ALBANY'S BRUCE DIXON HONORED BY LIONS INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT

Lions International President Sid L. Scruggs III, made a special stop in our District last Saturday, to honor Albany Lion Bruce Dixon.

Bruce Dixon of Berkeley will receive the first-ever international Lion Recognition Award for his actions that saved the lives of two women whose car was about to go up in flames after an Aug. 14 traffic accident in Berkeley.

The International President pinned Dixon with the first Lion's Recognition Award which is given for a life saving act.

Lion Bruce having witnessed a traffic accident noticed that the occupants of one vehicle were stunned and not exiting the car.

Lion Bruce also observed a fire under the hood of the car and no one else coming to help.

Bruce ran to the vehicle, found the door jammed and using only brute strength on his already injured shoulder was able to open the car door and help both the driver and passenger to safety only seconds before the entire car went up in flames.

Lion Bruce spoke very modestly about this event saying he only did what anyone else would have done under the circumstances.

International President Scruggs clearly moved by Bruce's modesty noted that four things make a true hero.

(1) Acting from the Heart.
One who simply does what needs to be done without thought of the dangers or benefits;.

(2) Eyes to see how things should be, not spending the rest of one's life saying "I wish I had.

(3) Taking personal Responsibility to bring about the visualized result;

       and

(4) Taking the Opportunity to make a difference.

Our International President believes that helping others in small ways results in large ways.

Bruce's incident is one example how one act not only affected the two young women involved in the accident but affected their family, friends and who know how many countless people they may touch.

Acts like those performed by Bruce and other important acts like the San Bruno Lions Club feeding breakfast to those displaced by the San Bruno fire are important acts that will have long term effects.

The award is presented to individual Lion members for lifesaving endeavors. Dixon is the award's first recipient.

Too often the everyday heroes are forgotten.

Not so last Saturday night.
